The Auckland members have asked the Government tn concede additional representation to the Natives. As the present five Maori members give a block vote at the bidding of one Europoan, it would be a wiser courso to induce the present number to one. In the House of Representatives on Monday last, Mr Thurson moved as an amendment that salaries of Civil Sorvants over £2OO should still be subject to the 10 per cent reduction. Mr Bunny opposed the amendment, and supported the Government proposals, The amendment was negatived by a majority of fivo. We are glad to see at last a movement on the part of the Mastertoii Cricket Club in favor of making a proper ground for the coining se:ison. If the members of the club take the'matter up with enemy and determination, we believe the residents of the town will be disposed to bank them in their ell'urts to re-establish crickot on a bei ter basis than heretofore,

Mr Shirley, tlie former popular host of the Royal Hotel, Feathorston, is aijaiu in this district, having sold out to advantage the large Hotel which he has conducted for the past two years at Napier. He is about to take a trip up the West Coast before engaging in any new venture. The resegnation of Mr McCardle as a member of the Town Lauds Trust will we trust be followed by that of his colloages. The party which has acted together in the recent disputes should either resign simultaneously or stand their ground together. As the latter course is now impracticable the former one should be adopted, Mr James Macara invites tenders for plougbin and harrowing 20, acres pf land on tlie Opaki. Messrs Williams and 'Barker tlje contractors for the new school invite tenders for building its chimneys. The Masterton Volunteers and Cadets will parade in the Band room this evening. The Evening Post expresses a doubt as to the truth of the statement we made in a recent issue of rabbits being sent to Wellington off poisoned lands in the Wairampa. Our contemporary by an applica-. tinn to the Railway Department will be able to verify the fact that rabbits are sent down. A rabbit Inspector in this district recently informed us that poison' was so generally laid throughout: the Wairarapa, and the rabbits themselves so migratory in their habits, that it was necesary to say a word of warning to purchasers in the Empire City. A rabbit may be shot where no poison lies, bui there is no guarantee that he has not picked some up on an adjacent property. A. rabbit will carry poison, without jts proving fatal, for three or four days, and in that time travel ut considerable distance. We think our contemporary, after this explanation, will be satisfied that as a matter of prudence it is unadviaablo to eat Wairarapa rabbits, The upper room of the Institute, Greytown, was again crowded on Monday evening, the eigth of the series_ of winter evening entertainments was given; Mr ■W.'G. Beard occupied the chair. Tho Committee again engaged the services of Mr Parker as- pianist, who commenoed the ontertainment by playing a spirited overture, Mr Wickerson 'their sang "Beautiful Isle of the Sea" very fairly, and was followed by Mr Day, who, as a new aspirant to vocal notoriety, got through " The Old Log Cabin in the Lane" in first-class style. The Misses York and Fuller sang the duet, " On the Danube River," very sweetly; and also "Fairy Elves, 1 ' both pf winch elicited rounds of applause,' Mr Skeeta road oi]o Candle's curtain lectures. Mr Ronaldson ."Paudeen O'Rafferly's Say Voyage," Mr W. G. Beard a humorous selecand Mr Black "Mr Perkins at tho Dentist," all of which amused the audience immensely. A piauo duet by the Misses Fuller was very well played, as also was a duet by Messrs Palmer and Loasby on the flagolelte and flute. Mr Palmer, as usual, elioited an encqre for a comic song, " Jolmy Morgan." Mr St, Georgo sang " Oh, Gently Breathe." and Mr Avery"" Wait for the 'Turn of the Tido," both of which were well received. A trio, "To all'you Ladies,"'by Messrs Ronaldson, Pajmer, 'aiid Wickerson, brought a good 'entertainment to a close. After singing' the National Anthem, the company dispersed, The recent gqld discovery has raised the hopes p,f fljo good citizens of Master : ton, and if these ljopeij ajg. realised, ami people go in for luxuries, we would remmd tljein that Muir and Dixon Carriage jainps are the host and cheapest in the district. And ibj buggies and cariages they turn out are the handsomest and most faithfully made in the Province Advt.
