THE FIRE BRIGADE CONTEST.

[To the Editor of the Wairarapa lUilt] Sir,—A letter appears in your issue of • yesterday signed "Carterton," comment- ■ < i|)g on the late Fire Brigade contest, and trying to excuse the beating the Carterton men obtained, by saying they only knew on tho previous Monday the contest would tab place tho following day. Now Sir, a challenge was sent to U9 by the Carterton Brigade dated July 7th, and we immediately wroto accepting it for the 27th of that month. But afterwatds at the request of their Brigade, postponed it until August 3rd.' On the Monday provious I received n letter asking us on account of the weather, to again, put the contOßt off. But at ft meeting held that night our members decided that the competition should come off on tho ditto fixed, Had our opponents owned to not having had sufficient practice we would have. ■ , .wailed till they were ready. 1 But after ' saying they were open to challenge any ■Brigade in tho Wellington district such a " doubt never entered our heads but what they had had plenty of practice to thrash such small fry as Mastertnn. The also had the same opportunity we ourselves had for practice, if they wore not afraid of mud and rain. But if firemen must wait in winter till there is neither, they will certainly not have many practices. About their team not being the same that competed in Wellington, I doubt very much jf they wero any better than those which performed here. The four fhat did pome were quito as smart as the four that did not. When the return match pomes ojf parterton may rest assured we will not try to work any little points nor misapprehend dates, but tako our beating like . men if we lose. Jas, Mviß, (Captain), M.V.F.B,
