CARTERTON FIRE BRIGADE.
[To the Editor, of "the Wairabapa Daily,] j Sir,—ln conjunction with many of the residents of Carterton, I declined to aid in promoting the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade -.when it was first started, some 12 months ago, .1 thought it merely; one of the 1 flashes in ! the pan we have often had brought -before- us, and that the movement would evaporate, almost as soon as it originated. Well, sir, I can acknowledge myself in error when I find my views'"are incorrect. I Have watched the Brigade, and i now think they are deserving of support. Their, members are liiiiited, but the greaternumber of them I have found, from practical watching, are regular in their attendance at-piictice, and, 'when need ; l]f!8 required,., have proved themselves "ready to'attend ; {q jjjejr charge .them jtonthe. bast of their abjlity; The Brigade may as yet be somewhat crude, but I' "think, having given the youngsters, a-fauv trial,"and finding they: ,mean work, the time has arrived,when ;sve older settlers,, who cannot; give theiii .active support, should see can ido towards giving them a helping band Outside. I would, therefore, lay one or two ofmy ideas before .my fellow-townsmen. First there is the pecuniary position., No, doubt onr juntos 'have someiyliat : rashly rushbd * into "an > expenditure they were hardly entitled to have incurred; but the debt is small—a fifty-pound note will_ afford"amongst i|s to give them a fair start id t a parental manner their present debt, arid trust they will gain experience ifi'oiri'.the , past 'and hot run M.mk /if. v' j " ;• Jljei), I wquid supsts|at eacl}:,l}oi|fee ; . holder o'otytrpjutp. ; M8 ,snja|l qui?) ppr annum,'according tp' the buildfpg risk he may have iiy the place, say frqnj 2j' 6d to 10s or-a £1 per year, towards the support .of the .Brigade. The mite thus; given from'house to house would not be felt by the donor, while it would adequately'provide for all.tli'e needs of the Brigade. , ' I .would also suggest to the officers of the Brigade the. necessity of obtaining the .depth of each well in/the district,, and, its 'average carrying capacity l -in "deoM/of •water;in summer and winter, say 7; •radius of two miles'from the Bank,"which" Wild fake in palli the settled district , wlk0?'0 the pnqrts ijf' the Brigade are (likely to be 'any. of my felW-settlers will'object fa the Brigade .obtaining this data, as it oan\ in no way act adversely to them. / \ I don't' think the Brigade should have to gojround and canvass.- Let any of iis 1 are filling ~to,-lend/ai helping/,hahd' ;.tb^them.' i go PH i : i w.hat,"donation .he |^3^l°/ J #i r i^ b^Wng^coount : -s!itbeV iiev,e,tnej;,w9pld appreciate such'a donation far'more than- any sum they may,get gpingr ound as beggarly •>r| Roping the Brigadetwill-persevere titaflfl -hot-'lje cast 1 down' J the" □ifßcultiea'in' tf?eif waji and tbat themselves a usgfal adjuijcji to our other local bodies, ' ' ' 1 I&m.&o., Patps CoNsomra, ;
