The Carterton Fire Brigade met for practice on Tuesday evening, under the command of Captain Fisk—24 members answering to tlip mil call. Prior to the practice commencing, the secretary presented Captain'Fisk with a handsomely illuminated add rasa, framed in totara knut, on behalf of and signed by past and present members of the Brigade, expressing their regret at his departure, then sutiafiiction with the manner in which h'i had discharged his duties, and th(! practical information and instruction he had given to tha members; and (visiting hitu success wherever he might go. After an hour's practice, the engine and apparatus having been housed, the members adjourned to the " Marquis" diaing room for refreshment, wh*re some 60 of the members of the Brigade and their friends sat down, and a very pleasant couple of hours spent, with toasts " Our Late Captain," " Fellow Brigades," and songs from several of the members present. The address will bo exhibited in Mr Hooker's window l»r a few days by kind permission of Captain Fisk. Tne meeting tiiusllj broke up about midnight. There is still great room for improvement in the attendance. We should like to see the baud appear iu uniform on those occasions. We are glad, however, to learn that this deficiency will soon be supplied.—On Tuesday the Grpytown Corps assembled, -Capt. Tally in command, lieutenant Cameron, SubLieutenant Avery, about 30 members answered to the roll oall. We tlynk it r mistake not to commence drill before 8 o'clock, and keep the fair ones waiting to undertake their part of the.evening's amusement. The instructor received several gentle reminders to, .cut it short, but ho lulled to take tlio hint;, and told thoin q,t the conclusion of the drill that they may #jways, expect the full hocr ft'.om him, d£'ho objected jo, tmvpl thirty miles for tlio sake of anything undo' that time; so if the fair ones were kept'in suspense, tljo blnmo rested with themselves fpr not being more punctual.
