HOPE-STREET INUNDATED.
7-- To tlio Editor of the Wairarapa Daily; Sib,—Ou reading .tho account.of the; proceedings of the lust meeting of "tire Borough Councilflwas surprised to find that no action had been taken to abate the nuisance in Hope-street. Itis impossible' for residents in that street to paBB along \ it, owing to the existence of a large pond in the centre.. Some of the adjacent, settlers have been considering the advisa-. bility of getting a few ducks and geese to place upon it. Some time ago a petition was sent to the Council by the residents,in which they promised to pay a portion of the expense of getting the street formed. It was considered in Council three sessions ago, and the Engineer instructed to get the work done. Mr Engineer has been through, and even guaged the depth of water in the poridwith a long pole, and yet there is no appearance of any further move in the matter. To read the long discussions on petty little points—p6ints that a few schoolboys could decide in a few minutes-is enough to give an ordinary mortal the nightmare, whilo matters touching the health and well-being of the community are allowed to be shelved. I think Mr Woodroofe is not far wrong with regard to the necessity of abolishing the Borough; at least I should be inclined to favor the idea of abolishing the present Borough Council, and placing a few men with a little common sense—or a few old ladies, who would look .after the health of the inhabitants—in their position. I make no excuse for sending this, as I .how your columns are always open for ' what may tend to to the public good. Duck Pond.
