The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 1881.
We are indebted to the secretary of the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society for a copy of the report which will be presented at the annual meeting if members on-tho 29lliinst. The plan adopted of circulating information of this kind a fortnight prior to the meeting is one that has hitherto been more honored in the breach than in the observance as far as this district is concerned. Wo hope the good example set by the Pastoral Society will be imitated. The report speaks generally in a hopeful tone. The pressing embarrassments which at one time worried the Committee and threatened the existence of the Society are now things.of the past. This comer has been turned, and though the Society is by no means a wealthy one, it estimates its excess of assets over liabilities at £955 17s 9d. The Committee speaks of its show last year as an unqualified success, and if its results are measured by the standard of the previous years' exhibition, the enthusiastic adjective "unqualified" may be fairly used. Everybody will admit that the reasonable expectations of the public were more than realised. The annual income of the Society for the 'past year amounted to £621 hut of this amount only £487 could be put clown as ordinary revenue, the balance being made up of special items such as debentures, <fcc. Its ordinary expenditure was about £4OO, leaving a good margin of nearly £IOO, which was very properly expended in repairs and improvements. Calculating the revenue and expenditure for the coming year on the basis of last years' returns there will be another hundred pounds available for improvements, and wo are glad to see that a proposal is to be brought before the annual meeting, in favor of erecting a boarded fence round the show grounds and planting trees and shrubs within the enclosure. There is, however, every reason to believe that the. ordinary- income next year will be ranch larger than it has been in the past one, and that the expenditure will not materially increase, so that the balance available for improvements will be considerably more than the sum we have named. Times are hotter, the public have more enh'dence in the success of the Society than they formerly had, and old divisions of opinion, which ouce were snch a drawback, are now dying out, The district, in fact, is beginning to recognise that the annual show is something to be proud of, and every man is willing to do a little towards making it a success, Much still remains to be done. It must not be forgotten that last year's show, successful as.it was, only offered to competitors about £IOO worth of prize money. It must be remembered that so small a sum expended on awards necessarily, stamps the Society as second-class, even among country district associations. The narrow means of the Society compelled it absolutely to limit its expenditure in this direction, but as its income increases we hope to see a little liberality exhibited. We have, however, every confidence in the judgment and enterprise of its Committee, oh this as in other things. The gentlemen who have associated their- names with the work of extricating the. Society from its difficulties and embarrassments have proved emphatically, that, they deserve not only the gratitude 'of 'the public, : but its support, and confidence,.
