A LARGE IRON STEAMBOAT.
The Fall River Steamboat ■ Cotuftany announces that a contract has been signed with John Jacob and Son for the construction for them of an. iron steamboat to be the largest j. ever built for the Long Islandl Souud trade between Mew York ' and Fall River., Her length over all on,.,> , (i deck will be 395 ft."; length of hull, 386 ft, extreme length of beam across the guards, 87ft.; [breath of -beam of hull, IjOft, |- and t 17f(. depth of lidld, "She will be built J. on the cellular system, that is with two hulls—the most recent type of shipbuilding insuring safety—the.- cellular ; spaces' nt the sides being 2ft. deep and along the bottom 3ft. ; deep between;the''. hulls, i The spaces between the two hulls will be divided into ninety-six watertight compartments, and in addition there will be six watertight bulkheads from the f • r inner hull to the main deck, The 1 .new v j boat will be provided with a'steam steer- . ing apparatus,;, an independentqv<; safety-steering quadrant aft in ' cqse of accident tn the Bteering gear. The means of extinguishing Ore, for closing one compartment from another, and other' visions for safety, will be on tliev latest' improved methods. The engine will be, 1 oil the "walking beam" principle,; 'with 1 110 inches diameter of cylinder, and. 14 feet stroke, There will be. four path boilers, their construction beitig such as 1 to warrant carrying a pressure of steam 601bs .to the square inch, although the working pressure will be about 2olbs to the square inch. The paddle shaft wjll be.26ih in diameter, and with the piston rod, cdnnectin? rod, apd rqck shafts', will •be made of the best wrought iron. iTjie machinery will be enclosed in a compartment of longitudinal and athwartship.: i: bulkheads, carried up to the hurricane deck. ; The passenger accommodations are intended to be superior to those of any steamboat now afloat. The boat is to be constructed by May. 1882.
