CARTERTON LIBRARY.

The following is the reportof the building committee of the Carterton Institute, laid before the subscribers- atthe annual meet, ng held on Tuesday evening-.last.by the chainnan,;Mrßooth ;-• v;.''&'r>[\'{'' Carterton, May 3rd. 1881. ■ rtoTWMEN-It.fan'sto'm'vlpt'as Chairman of your Buildirig- Committee'to congratulate you upon the completion of this flnelbuilding inwhiph are hiet3together,'J and to hand it over to you for the purpose of a library andreading-room, andgenoral. literary. institute.: I ..am;itha'idtjral:toObe'v'-'i- 1 -----'"^

able to say that the work of erection has been carried on from' beginning to end without accident, and that the debt remaining to be paid is a very trifling one. The lecture-hall is 55ft by 24ft, and has two rooms at -.the rear of it suitable for offices, and measuring 14ft by 12ft.. The library is 24ft by 25ft, and adjoining.it are two rooms—one a chess room, lift by 24ft, and one intended' for a reading room, 18ft by'24ft. All the rooms are '. fireplaces, are lined throughout with tongued and grooved dressed lining, and are nearly 14ft high. The balance-sheet which Mr Snodgrass, the treasurer, will present to you, is, I think, a very satisfactory one; and if the same earnest labor which has secured the building is applied to remove the debt, we shall soon see it wiped out. In carrying on the work we have had many friends; but the committee wish to say to this public meeting, and they doit with grateful pleasure, that to Mr Parker is largely due, the result which we are all proud of. His help has been constant and patient' and has been afforded without halting from the beginning until now. We also very thankfully acknowledge the gift of five tables 12 feet long Jfß Mr Smith. Mr Anderson thesurJfeyor kindly pegged off the ground free of charge, and Mr Pettitt the carpenter, besides finding the labor, put down in the balance sheet, has also given a great deal of time in placing and malting bookshelves, and other furnituro required in tke Library; . . It now only remains for me to ask the Carterton people to rally round their Institute; and as speedily as possible remove the debt. There is a large and well selected library, and I hope by a generous and continuous help on your part it will become an ever increasing blessing to the name and characters of the present and many future'generations of Carterton people.
