J, IORNS' & CO.'s SALE OF MR A. COCKBURN'S STOCK.

This sale had been looked forward to for sorao timo with a considerable nmounl of interest by the district generally, and it was very gratifying to all parties con' cerned to see the attendance on Wednesday morning, the whole valley being represented, besides Wanganui, Wellington, and Napier. Some delay was caused at starting owing to the absence of 'conveniences in the shape of yards to display the stock, and the audience began to eomplain, A start was made at one o'clock, when the auctioneer, Mr J. lorns, mounted the corner post and apologised for the delay, also recommending Mr Cockbum's Block as being second to none in the provincial district. The first submitted was a lot of 450 strong lambs which hud been shorn and were knocked down to Mr Carman at 6s 3d. Next came the fat sheep, GOO wethers not extra large but of good quality; these brought 8s 9d by the same purchaser, 300 store ewes and wethers brought fa 3d, also bought by Mr Carman, who, we learn, has leased the farm from MrOockburn, Next came some splendid draught mares, which sold from £2O to £sl each; these all going out of the district. A few young horses closed the day, making a total this day of £IOOO. An earlier start was made on Thursday, morning, and the first line offered was cattle, starting with dairy cows, amongst which were some really beautiful milch cows and heifers (some 30 in all), selling from Ll3 down to L 4 each. A mob of 30 weanera brought 32s each; good yearlings brought L 3 each, two-year-olds, L 4 2s Gd, and large 1 steers Lfj 10s. Then followed the balance of the draught horses, some 40 selling (including

ontire selling for LgQ, being nearly all bought by foreign'buyerg. ■ " , ' A young bull by Prince Albert sold for LG, and the Ohriiitojiurch' bull, 'jtfhe! Duke of Athelstein," ; ps bought by Mr. Carman for L2O, whioh was considered^ cheap. ' ' Some farm implements concluded the second day's Bale, carts, chaff-cutter, harrows, etc., being sold at fair prices; bringing the total of the two days' sale up to L2OOO.

Competent judges averred that; all through really good prices were realised; especially in sheep and cattle; the fact of the horses fetching low figures did not surprise anyone.
