POLICE COURT

GREYTOWN, TUESDAY.

[Before E S. Warded, Esq., .R.M Mara Kiugi v Iriatara Kingi.—Assault onHoriana Natarahiri.

Defendant pleaded guilty, but asserted that the assanlt was provoked by very abusive and foul language by plaintiff, and asked ifit was necessary for him to repeat the language. His Worship explained that he must state the language used, as unless he. could show this to have been so bad as to have justified the assault the judgment of the Court would go against him. Defendant stated that the language was very had, aud rather than repeat it he would accept the verdict of the Court. The plaintiff, who was considerably bruised and knocked about, was then called, but did not provoso delicate as the defendant, as she gave the language used (which was of a disgusting nature), and declared that the defendant used it towards her.

The Court fined the defendant 40s, with costs 17s, and ordered him to enter into his own recognisances of and find another surety of a similar amount to keep the peace for six months, or, in default, to go to prison for 14' days. The fine was paid, and the surety found, after some little delay.. '

The rest of the bueluoss of the Court consisted of several debt cases, some of which were settled out of Court, in others judgment oonfessed, and in the rest judgment given for plaintiff.
