THE TENUI CRICKET MATCH.

[To the Editor of the Wairarapa Daily;]

Sir,—Some of the remarks of your Whareama correspondent in to-day's issue call for a few words from me, as secretary of the Masterton Borough Cricket Club, to clear myself from any insinuation as to discourtesy in ignoring communications from the Tenui-Whareama Club. When first trying to arrange the return match I quite understood from some of the members of the Tenui Club that the 12th ult, would be a convenient day for their team to play. I called a meeting of the Masterton Club, and found that eleven players were willing to visit Tenui on the day proposed. I consequently wired to that effect, and then received a reply saying, that the Tinui club could not play on the 12th, and asking me to arrange some other day. Your correspondent accuses me of ignoring this message altogether. I could not of course reply immediately, (neither did I imagine that an answer was expected for a day or two) as I could not take upon myself to arrange "some other day" for eleven players to undertake the journey to Tinui, without seeing them individually, Instead of ignoring the telegram, I was doing all I could to be able to send a satisfactory reply. In the meantime, I received another telegram from the captain, but too late to reply to on the same day, so I answered it on the following morning. After I found that it was impossible to get up a team to play on any other day than the one originally proposed, I wired, " Sorry cannot arrange for a team to visit Tinui this season,"—Your correspondent then absurdly remarks "giving no reason." Now surely not being able to get a team to go, was a very good reason why we could not play the return match, as it will be evident to everybody, (except perhaps your correspondent) that wo could not very well play a cricket match without players. I am, &c., C. A. Briggs, Hon Sec. Masterton Borough Cricket Club,
