POLICE COURT.
CAETBRTON, TUESDAY. (Before B. Boys, W. Booth, and G. H. Lister-Kaye, Esq_s. J.P.'s, Caroline Goodin was charged under the Vagrancy Act, 1806, with being found on tho public highway on 12th March last, having no visible and lawful means of support, and being an idle and disorderly person.
The prisoner resisted being brought into Court, and on being placed in the dock refused to plead, and throughout the case- exhibited a violent! and sulky demeanor.' ''
The evidence of Constable Evans went to show that on Saturday ovening he found her lying on the footpath on the main road, that sho refused to get up and walk, and swore and used obscene language to him; that, to his knowledge, sho had beeii in the habit for some time past of sleeping in outhouses, but did not know where she obtained food. Several complaints had been made by settlers, but all refused to lay a complaint, thus the prisoner had not previously been arrested. The Court, who throughout showed great leniency and consideration in dealing with' the case, sentenced the prisoner to three months' imprisonment, and she was removed to Wellington by the mid;day train. . -
