The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1881.

y A few weeks ago the public in the : . Wairarapa were invited to assist in floating a proposed company for boiling J down, meat-preserving, packing .of 6 butter for export, condensation of milk, - and the manufacture of artificial j mailings! The public, however, did I not respond to tho appeal, for tolerably obvious reasons, The proposed undertaking was more a Wellington nier- |- chants' company than a country dist; tricfc enterprise. The, Wairarapa, too, . ( which was expected to be a main feeder r of the contemplated operations, only 8 played second fiddle in its prospectus, 6 and thirdly the company was formed to acquire certain existing interests, and the public are wont to look with a certain amount of doubt at any proposahvhich is based on a desire of ' certain poisons to surrender at a valuation "existinginterests." Though ! 1 the Htltt Industrial Company misear- \ ] vied, we still are of the opinion that ut i company of a somewhat similar charac- I , ter is almost essential to the prosperity ■ of the Wairarapa, The' company, J however, should be a purely local in stitution, promoted by the leading ! stock and station owners in the dis° t trict, and formed for the purpose, not t of acquiring existing interests, but for * making a business for itself by an economic application of local capital to ] the development of local industry. Though times are still a little out of

joint, wo do not see why a capital of .£IO,OOO, or more if necessary, cannot be raised in the Wairarapa. The financial support would all depend upon tho proposals which might be submitted. If a sensible practical plan of operations were laid down, showing in black and white the cost of such" an industrial enterprise, the amount of business it could transact, and the probable margin for profit, there are plenty of stock and station holders in the Wairarapa who could command at a day's notice, the necessary capital, We do not recommend tho immediate adoption of any speculative scheme, or the acceptance of any cut and dried data, All we would ask.our readers to affirm is that an industrial company would be a valuable local institution. If this be once admitted, the question of how, when and were might be carefully discussed at leisure. No hastily organised company can be reasonably expected to be a commercial success, But if, after mature consideration, if, after obtaining exact' information as to cost of site, plant and stock, a plan of operations can be agreed upon —a plan in which every point and detail has been carefully canvassed—then we would submit that an undertaking carrying with it a definite conviction of- commercial success, could be projected, and no money difficulty would bar its adoption. We shall.he glad to see settlers in this-district who take an interest in its advancement expressing an opinion freely for and against the expediency of a local industrial company. We do not, oni-

i selves, desire to"see anymore unsuc cessful companies floated,.. and unles; the conditions' under which any hey proposal ■migiit be submitted clearlj indicated'success, wo certainly slibuh nbt. give it our support;

A notice of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Show appears in another column. The committee will welcome exhibits of cereals and other produce from farmers,

Professor Hasehnayer opened to a good house at the Public Hall, Carterton, on Wednesday evening, and fully sustained the credentials we have received through the public press prior to his coming amongst us here. " The nomination of candidates for the Masterton Rabbit District takes place today, at Messrs Bacon and Wrigley's premises. A good deal of interest is being taken m the election, and there will be plenty of nominations. '■ We are informed that a spark from one of the railway engines ignited the grass near Clareville on Wednesday, which spread and set fire to the fenco, and from it to ahout worth of timber lyiiF near for building purposes, The .timber was destroyed, and also several panels of tcncing. An interesting meeting takes place toat Carterton, on the scab question. The Government just now .is endeavoring to atone for its own negligence on Crown Lauds by worrying settlers who have-the misfortune to get a stay sheep' off waste lands. This, no doubt, among other questions, will be sufficient to rouse our pastoral lords into eloquence.

We quite concur in the following suggestion made by our contemporary the Staudard:-" Messrs Bunny and Beetham will soon address their constituonlß. It seems to us a mistake for them to have to address a number of meetings if it could ho helped. If one of the townships of the Valley could be selected for one mooting to be held in, and a train ran to enable mon to attend all over the district, all practical purposes would be obtained, A full report of all that took place at such a meeting could be published by ourselves aiitl the Waikauai'a Daily."-

No committees having been elected at Gladstone and Kaiwaewae, It was resolved that meetings for the purpose of electing committees be held as the achoolhouses.it 7 p.m. on the 16th of March j the first meetings of the now committees to be held immediately afterwards. Mrßadland, the new master at Karori tendered the resignation of his appointment, on the ground of ill-health Tlio Secretary recommended that Mr Badlahd, who wa=t an excellent teacher, should be appoined at Tinui, and that tho present maateratthat placo might with advantage be removed to \Vaihenga.
