The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY FEBRUARY 17, 1881.
A collision between tho.Masterton Borough Council and the-Government appeal's imminent, and should one occur it cannot for it moment bo doubted that it will lie at tjic expense of the latter. It is not too much to say that the Council has sustained, at the rude hands of tho Government a loss which is almost irreparable, and an injustice which no spirited public body could possibly put up with, Wo alludo to tbo extinguishing of the solitary borough lamp—that single ray which once.' comforted benighted Borough Councillors, while, it enabled them to declare that gas was not needed in Masterton, tho Councillors having provided an oillcionfc substitute. At ono fell swoop, liowovor, tho lump committee, the lamplighter, and the inspector of lamps were annihilated. Masterton's ono little ewe lamp was stolen, and the Telegraph Commissioner was tho rich man. It has been stated in mjljgation of the conduct of the officers of this branch of Her Majesty's service, that the lamp had hpen affixed to tho hoad of a damaged telegraph pole, and that tho Government had a proprietary" interest in this department of tho Borough Council. Wo believe this, however, to be a baso calumny. If the BfjpHgtnro on which tho illuminator was builtuadl)GC)t originally a telegraph pole, no doubt it had been legally transferred au.d- vested ju tho Borough. Council prior 'to tho superstructure! being placed upon it, On .Tuesday last a long discussion took place in tho Birough Council on the-important question of re-erecting fchs lamp, We understand that Or. Russell has been vary properly selected as tho champion of the Council to defend its rights against an aggressive department; and it is whisporcd that Cr Russell is propared to vindicate the authority of..the Borough by placing tho said lamp successively on the top of every telegraph post in the Borough. In this way it is obvious that not only will Hie Government bo outmanoeuvred, but the lighting department of tho Borough instead of being comjoutratod on one point will be diffused aj oyer the town. Cr Russoll will be, as it wero, the Edison of Masterton, and this township will be the best lit country setlleuient in tho colony.

Our attention has been directed by a Bideford settler,to the iiiconrcniont. way in which the mail service betwoen -that place and Mastoi'ton is arranged- The mail ROO3 up on Sunday morning, and cloaoa for return on Sunday night, so that ■that people have to come in for their letters and iinaffer them tho same day, or liißo a whole week, This is bad enough, but lliore.is another unpleasant feature in the system'. ' •Although, the mail arrives on Sunday, the postmaster is in.no wise hound to ((ire it out on that day, and should he have a dislike lo imy pßrson,_ho could compel him ti> wait till the following day fur his correspondence. Tlie return mail would then liavo been despatched to Mastertnn, and perhaps an important Wellington, or other letter would have to remain unanswered fur ut week, unless a trip lo Mastorlou were made, and the letter posted .there Unless there is any very special reason why the mail should be despatched oil Sunday, and returned the same day, it is quite manifest, that an alteration should be made,
