Richard Collins, assistant to Mr 0. H. Giles, saddler, Carterton, met with a severe accident on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the shin bone being split laterally, He was riding along White's line and while filling his pipe had thrown the reins on the horse's neck. The horse stumbled on a log, the rider went to catch at the reins, when the animal swerved and

Professor Westen opened in the Town Hall last evening, to a somewhat thin audience. His performing dogs are welltrained, and his "Punch and Judy" a capital entertainment for juveniles. He deserved more support than he received last evening, and we trust he will get a little more encouragement to-night.

A correspondent at Eketahuna informs us that he lias just returned through the Eketahuna to Alfredton Road, and'that Mr H. _ Thompson has erected four substantial rough bridges to open the road (on Mr F. Chapman's contract),, there not being sufficient time to complete the authorised bridges on account of the difficulty in getting the necessary timber.

In reference to the proposal to postpone the Pahiatua land sale, owing to the date fixed clashing with the races,-the question was submitted to the Government whether this would be practicable, The reply received is to the following effectAs the' law stands, it is not possible to postpone the sale of the Pahiatua Block untilthfi 17th February. The.sale must therefore take place on the date advertised, namely,' 10th February, at Masterton. ■.
