THE LATE FIRE.
(To the Editor Wairarapa Daily,) Sir,—A statement appears in your today s issue to the effect that the fire at the Club Hotel on Sunday last was caused by a defective chimney. From a personal inspection of the chimney, we are able to say most certainly that' this is-flot tjta case, the chimney being thoroughly well■buiU and perfectly safe j and we believe thpfirp originated frop a piecp of ftirn, ing soot which was thrown out of -.'the top chimney and lodged under the shingles'at least seven feet away from it. We make this denial in justice to Mr Elkins, who uses every possible precaution against firp, and who would, if the, chimney inques* tion were at all defective, have it at once removed. - •
