It expressed the satisfaction of the Committee with the efforts of the teachers, as shown by the Inspector's report. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Loasby, seconded by Mr Hawke- That the repurt and balance sheet as read be adopted. The clauses of the Education Act referring to the election of Committees having been read, the following gentlemen wero nominated .-Messrs Bock, St, George, Beard, Wakelin, Cotter, White, Jackson,, Smith, Wood, Hollard, and Skeet.
The ballot showed the following result (Mr Bell boing appointed scrutineer) : Cotter, 24; Bock, 23, Wood, 22; St, George, 22; Beard, 21; White, 16 ; Wakelin, 16; Smith, 16; Bollard, 14; Jackson, 10; Skeet, 8 The first seven were therefore declared duly elected. Mr Cotter briefly thanked the meeting for having placed him at the head of the poll.
Mr Bock, in thanking the meeting for having again elected him, called attention to the present absurd mode of electing Committees. He pointed out that one or two could put in anyone, they liked, by giving them their whole number of votes,: whereas some who. did not poll • euffi-' cient votes to elect. them had a greater number who voted for them. •
Rev Mr White quite agreed with Mr Bock that the system was" a bad one, It was meant to protect minorities in large places,- but it did not work. well in country places, He proposed, and Mr St, George seconded—That in the opinion of' this meeting the present system of voting for the election of School Committees is inexpedient, and that the.Committee be requested to forward the resolution to the Government.—Carried.
* It was resolved on the motion of Mr Loasby, seconded by Mr Jackson—That a vote_of thanks be passed to the retiring Committee for' their services durino the past year.'. It was resolyed on the motion, of Mr Wood, seconded by Mr WaJteltn—That the service* of the former clerk and treasurer-Mr Webster-he retained on the same remuneration. Mr Beard here callod the attention of the meeting to the fact that the Board should have appointed a time for Hie Committee to hold their first meeting. A long discussion took plaoe m to whether this pertained to Committees in newly-opened school districts, or to nil newly-appointed Committees; it bein» finally decided that the Chairman should write to the Board, asking them to appoint a time for the Committee to meet. The headmaster called attention to the fact that the school well was dry, and the necessity for it being sunk, It was resolved—That the clerk be empowered to employ a man to deepen the well, This concluded tho business.
CARTERTON. AND CLAEEVILLE, The annual reports and balance sheets of the last year were laid before the meeting- of householders eligible to elect members tor the Carterton and Olareville School Districts to serve on the respective School Commutes, held—aa per Gazette nntice—on Monday night, TiI l o e n Carlerto " Buhool I,eoei ff ere Tin- A ' m ™ l an expenditure of LIOOI6S 6d, leaving a credit to the school fund of L2 4s Id; but this balance by receipts since the 31st ult. had been wowed to .LMIMd, all outstanding liabilities having been met. At Olareville the receipts had been LO9 10s Id against an expenditure- of L 66 7s 7d£avin 2 a credit balance.in hand of-L3 2s 6d. The reports and balance sheets were passed as read,
At Carterton it will be seen by the report of committees chosen appearing in our issue of yesterday that many of the old members, after a faithful discharge of their duties for many, years past, have thought it expedient to retire from service, and the consequence is a large infusion of young blond in the newly-elected Committee, whom we hope to see work together as amicably, and give the same satisfaction to the district that' their pre: decessors have done. At Olareville we notice that the old settlers are still to the fore, and past performances are therefore not likely, to be militated against, or their, sphere of usefulness lessened, as. they have all had years of experience in their duties, Our veteran and ■ esteemed townsman, MrR Fairbrother, heads the Cartertonteam.whileMr Oorpehas been chosen Chairman of the Olareville Committee, The latter committee hold their next meeting on the second Saturday in February, while the similar meetin« for Carterton will be called by the secretary, Mr G„ A. Fairbrother, under the'direction, of the Chairman. Both meetings passed off quietly.. °

In Hie month of July tot MrGurr, the late head-master, resigned, having received an appointment at luvercargill. Mr Tuckey was appoiuced by the Board, with your Com. mittee's approval, to fill the vaoancy., The two Masters Gurr (pupil teaoberaj also left soon after, and Mrs Huntley was appointed. There has been a great falling off in the number attending the school duriug the past year. This arises from the fact that a large number of families have left the distort The Committee regret to state the.headmaster found it necessary to expel two boys for improper conduct in December last. One of the parents felt aggrieved, and appealed to the Committee, who appointed a time, viz,. 11th January, to hear his appeal; and after carefully considering the evidence, the Committee did not think it advisable to take any further steps in the matter.
The annual examination took place on Friday and Saturday, the 3rd and 4th Deo,,' with the following result .—Standard 1,14 passed (8 boys and 6 girls); Standard 11, 16 passed (7 boys and 9 ffirls); Standard 111., 10 passed (8 boys and 2 girls); Standards IV., V., and VI., 1 passed in each.
