Mr J. Vile one of Hl3 members of the Masterton School Committee recently ■ elected is ineligible, as he resides out of the district. It is possible the election might be upset from this oversight, It would, however, serve no good purpose at a time when the interest of the school are at stake with the Board for the school to be even temporarily unrepresented by a corninittee. No doubt Mr Vile, as soon as he is informed of the position in which ha is placed, will immediately resign,
We would call the attention of the Grey town Borough Council, to the absolute danger there exists in filling the ditch in West Street, with the dry docks taken from the water tables in Main Street, If a match happened to be dropped amongst it it would ignite like touch wood, and there is no telling the amount of damage that might ensue. While upon'this subject we might also mention the fuctthatin West Street opposite the parsonage, the briars will soon grow over the road, if not looked after. An hour would clear it all away and it is a mo3t unsightly obstruction.
- His Excellency the Governor is now at Hawke's Bay, and is about to return to Wellington via Wairarapa. Colonel Reader arrives to-day in Masterton to make arrangements with Mr James Macara for bringing him through the Bush. It is very probable that Sir Arthur will arrive in Masterton qu Friday. It an opportunity presents itself, wo should te glad to see our Borough Council welcome Her Majesty's representative on the occasion of his firsUisit to this town.
A correspondent writes .-—Great dissatisfaction is expressed by the residents of ireytowijiit the -modp of conducting the election of School Committees, In the first place it was supposed to be by ballot, and it was noticed that several in the room were comparing voting' papers. But the principal cause of complaint is the fact that a householder can give himself or anyone else 7 votes, so that supposing there were' 28 present, as happened at Greytown, only 8 voted for one gentleman and placed him at tho head of the poll, whereas another gentleman had 14 supporters and polled only 15 votes, thus throwing him out'of the Oomrnitteo, although ho had twice the number of supporters. A resolution was passed at the meoiing to the effect that the system of voting was inexpedient.
A few flashes of humor writes the Times relieved the somewhat dry busi-ness-like proceedings yesterday at the Conference of Fire Brigade Delegates. A representative from the Wairarapa treated the assembly to- a description of how they do things in Masterton, The subject under discussion was the propriety of corporations furnishing deserving municipal firemen with medals, and the delegate scouted the notion of tl|e Masterton Corporation opening their hearts for anything of the sort. " Why," said he, "they've only one lamp at Masterton, and they requisitioned the Government to give them a damaged telegraph post to stick it on." The same genial delegate hud also an evident knowledge of ''the great unpaid of the Wairarapa, "If you serve out medals indiscriminately," he drily observed, " it'll be as bad for the recipient as if he were made 'a J.P," These little touches of nature were found to be very refreshing yesterday,
A somewhat extraordinary 'case of burglnry was committed on Saturday last by three lads of the name of Greening, aged 12, JO, and 9 respectively In the absence of Mr Girdlestone nnd his family, they entered his houso through a broken glass paiielju the front door,' and ransacked the whole place in their search for articles of value, removing the bed clothes turning out the chest of drawers, and' even discovering and opening a Sbcret drawer in an escritoire. They secured considerable booty, including watches, chains/silver ware, thefchildren's birthday mugs, and a variety of other things, most of which they buried in the ground near their own home, secreting a valuable gold chain in an old kerosene lamp, where it was found by their mother. On' receiving information of the affair, Sergt. M'Aardle soon discovered who the oulpritß were, and found the stolen articles, but did not crrest the offenders and take them to the lock up, on account of .their tender age. The Sergeant 'has hud the matter before the Resident Magistrate for his advice and instructions, and the children, who are living with-their parents, will probably be brought up under section 13 of sub-section 5 of the Neglected and Criminal Act 1867, as' they ,are quite beyond the control of either their parents or the police. '
''Achijd of MrO. Bishop's, at'Greytown, met: jy|th a rather serious accident on SaturdayM. It.nppearathatthe mother, who, was holding- the' child in her arms,' wasstanding at the front door which is a glass one, whon it Bhut;to violently.and the child's head Went through theglass, leaving two-very ugly Rashes. Fortunately, beyond the loss of a quantity of blood, no serious results fare likely.'to.take place. '■-. "MrE. £ BeUhas--started with, hi 8 bakery business. Yesterday he baked his first-batchof bread and a quantity of small goods,- There are now four bakery establishments -in, Greytown, Where they are all to get a business is a question, but the result is bread at 6d the four pound loaf.
' The Committee of the Greytown Amalgamated Friendly Societies Sports, held a meeting on Monday evening, after paying accounts, it was found that the Committee would have a creditable balance for the next year. Messrs Bock and Avery were I appointed Auditors, . Those dog collars again ! We notice that the Greytown Borough Council with more liberality than some others, have given an order for dog collars at 8d each, so as in eusure a good quality, We have seen the article in question, and can confidently recommend any one purposing to kill thair dogs becmse'they cannot get a good collar, to pay the 'registration fee so that they may have a good collar for their 10s. Mr A. B. Jackson is'the maker and has turned them out in his usual workmaulike manner. ■: At a meeting of the Stewards of the Wairarapa Jockey Club, held last week it was pointed out that the great land sale is advertised to take place at Mastelton on the first day of the Club meeting. The Secretary was therefore instructed to write to the Commissioner of Grown Lands asking him if possible to avoid the two events clashing, Mr Holdsworth has replied stating that the matter will be laid before the Land Board at a meeting on Thursday next, when it is to be hoped the sale will either be postponed for two days, or held a day earlier than now advertised.
