Be had, he said, just returned from Oastlepoinl, and could not have been present earlier. He spoke op the question of the proposed new aite, and invited an expression of opinion thereon from the meeting. Mr James Russell, on behalf. of the JKuripuni settlers, expressed his approval $ the proposed new site. , .;. .Mr Pay ton-moved, the adoption of the rwoit. '•..■•■•• '*. •' Mr Ruißflll questioned whether the
meeting could adnpt it, as it had to be presented to a superior body—the Eduoaiion Board—and the meeting had no power to alter it. Mr MeCardle, speaking to the resolution, reported that ho had spoken to several members of the Education Board on the proposed change of site, and each one of them was favorable to it. The report'at.d balance sheet were then adopted, and 1111 unanimous vote of thanks to the reti'int? Committee passed, MrCaselbeig then left the chair, and Mr Renall Was reinstated, in it for the election of a Committee. The fulll'iwing were proposed for the new Committee:—A. W. Renall, E. Feist. M. Onselhera, J., Pay ton, J. C. Boddinston, Jas. Russell, T. O. D'Arcy, J. Vile," W. Sellar, W. VV, MeCardle, A. Bish, W. Alexander, D, Donafd, W, Wilton, and H.Cole. Mr Feist expressed a wish for his name to be withdrawn from the list, Messrs Grundy and Waitte were appointed scrutineers. The result of the ballot was the election of Messrs Russell, Bnldinaton, D'Arcy, Vile, Payton, MeCardle,. and Donald Donald—the two representatives of Kuripuni, Messrs Rub sell and Donald, being returned by block vote. Mr MeCardle said he would be glad to retire from the Committee in favor of Mr Caselberg, who stood next on the list, Mr. Caselberg was very well satisfied with tho Committee as it stood, He had served his year, and though ho took a strong interest in the school, had very little time to devote to public duties. Kuripuni was very well represented now, and he thought it was better to let matters remain as they were. The Chairman decided that Mr MeCardle, having been declared duly elected, could only retire accordiug to the form provided by the Act, Mr Russell, having Wen placed at the head of the poll, returned thanks to those who had voted for him, Mr Payton moved the following reso lution:—That this meeting disapproves of the present syst.em of block voting. Mr MeCardle seconded the resolution. Mr Caselberg spoke in favor of it. Under the block vote three persons could upset the wishes of a majority. A small minority could, aB it wero, rob the majority,of its rights. Mr P'Arpy was in favor of doing away with, cumulative voting, The question had been mooted all over the colony, and he'hope.d to see "the Lopa} Ejections Act or soiiie other method of electioj) substituted for the present one. Mr Feist entirely approved of the resolution, He never bjiiiself' gave more than one vote to any one candidate at.a school election, Mr James Russell complained that gentlemen seemed, to think that the election as far as the Kuripuni vote was concerned was a oonnived one, and denied that such was the case. The Chairman said that some of the old hands would soon be hopping off to the cemetery, and he was glad, to see some new ones in, Ho did not object altogether to a minority having a njeans to seoure a representation, though tijiepower given to it under the Act might be abused by sending in men on a oommittee who were absolutely hostile to a.school. The new committee might have a wild elephant of two in it, but he always understood that two tame .ones could lead one wild animal, and he liad no doubt but that it would get along all right'.'"''
