. e The adjourned meeting of the Council was held on Monday' evening Present—His Worship the Mayor, atid Cra Baillie, Grey, Gallagher,' Thompson, Wakelin, Hiiiglr, and Fuller. The minutes of the last annual meeting' were.read and confirmed. . CORIIESrONDEN'CE, Outwards: To W. G. Beard, Esq., asking for information ro the Dog Registration Act, 1880. ■lnwards: From W.,'6. Beard, Esq., stating that the' ; Council had no,option but to enforce, the provisions of the Act. The Town Clerk reported that lie 'had ordered a punch for badges and 1? dozen dog colltis, and, by request,, read the Act for Registration of dogs.-for 1880. . Or Bji.illio thought that tho tax was a very heavy'one,'but evidently thore-was no help for it. ■ Cr Wakolin thought that there should .be fourteen days' nolice:giyen.fi'om..date. Or Grey stated that'before they went into this nntter they ought -.to appoint a Registrar under tho iie\v Act', and moved that Mr Buck be ..reappointed. Cr Wakelin seconded - tho resolution. Cr-3iiillie.,thous»ht.that"there.was no necessity for that, as Mr Bock was registrar under the borough bye-laws.. Or Grey- thought that the new Act required »w registrar to be appointed. ' Or Haigh,-before the resolution, was put would liko to remark that lie, would like to set someone appointed to -see that tho Act was carried out, and not to bo like •fqrmar years—somo have to pay tho tax, and other? be let off.
The resolution was then put and cartied.." • Or Haigh then moved, and Or Baillie seconded—That tlie Inspector of Nuisances be appointed $n officer under. section 13 of tho Act, and to-refioiVs half the 'fines.—Girried, /■'. ■■■_. Or Raillie moved, Or Gallagher seconded—That tlie time of .registration be extended 14, days. Or Grey liiovsd as an amendment— That the matter be left in tho hands of the Town Clerk. . ■ There being, no seconder tho resolution was put and carried. The following, roport of the, Works Committee was then'read : ' . . Your Committee beg £6 report that the following, tenders have been received for the respective works—viz.: Fisher's lino —accepted,' Neils. Neilson, 14s 9d per chain j 'declined, H, Morris, lfa; and 'W. ; Bropks,.-£15.1.03 for the.contract, or £l3 lOs if tlie tihie was extended to two months. For part formation and .metalling West-Street—Accepted, H, Morris, 28s per ghain j declined, M. Ryan, 37a; 0. Bishop,' 37s' fid; T. Wiggins, 40s. For.. Kuralav/liiti IJoad—Accepted, T. Wiggins, £8 ss, aiid 5s each'stump in Main-street; declined, 3. Morris, £lO. He was the only one from South Greyjewn on the Committeo, but. he was not going : to he ibotinced out. of. the rights of South Greyto -pri, and did hot like to see those works thrown out, Cr G)'ey agreed with Cr W&kelin, and thought that those w&rks ought to. be done. His Worship said that it was a question of finance. It was found that they could not be done at present., CrWakelin took that into consideration when he mide tne proposal. There was then over £2OO to the credit of the Borough and it could not have been all spent on small contraots, since therg wp no large ones, : Cr Thompson said he thought that Cr

Cr Haigh was hard on Cr Wakelin. "Every Councillor could not attend every meeting, and Cr Wakelin was right. Why did not the Committee recommend the Papawai Eoad as well as the Moroa Road ?' Cr Thompson contended that the Works Committee wero doing all in their power to do tho work, It was resolved on the motion of Cr Baillie seconded by Cr Grey—That the report of the Works Committee bo adopted.
. FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT. The Treasurer reported the amount to tho credit of the Council at £225 9s 2d. Tho following accounts have been submitted T. Wiggins, contract, £4 12a 6d j George Pound, fencing, £llss; rent, £9; Lighting and fiviup, £2103; poll clerk, 15a Gd; Wakelin & Co., £7los 9d; collector, £2 lis 3d. As they have all been examined and found correct, your Committee vould recommend payment of same. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Gray, seconded by Cr Baillie—That the report as road bo adopted. - The Town Clerit reported that the well at tho pound bad been sunk and a pump erected at a cost of £6193, and a trough put in tho pound at a cost of £llos. It was resolved that the amounts be paid. It was brought before tho Council that a resolution had been passed at a public meeting that the Council be requested to pay the expenses entailed by the deputation re removal of Doliceman. Eesolved—That the Council defray the expenses of tho deputation. Cr Haigh would like to know what action tho Council intended taking in the matter; would they endorse the action taken at the public meeting ? It was decided that paying tho expenses of the deputation was sufficient. The Town Clerk reported that the obstructions in Eaat-st. had been removed. . Eesolved—That the meetings of the Council be held on the first Monday in each month, at 7 p.m. ' Tho report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read,- which was merely formal, and asking what action lie should, take with regard to vehicles on the Kurntawhiti Eoad on the 21st inst. . . Cr Gray moved, Cr Baillie seconded—That the Town Clerk instruct the Inspector to have vehicles removed from obstructing the' road on the 21st iugt, (vide tho bye-laws). Cr Thompson said the Couucil had 'no power to interfere with vehicles where the parties owning them had chargo. Cr Wakelin moved as an amendment that the Inspector take for liiß guidance, the byelaws of tiie Borough, Cr Thonpsou seconded tho amendment, which was carried.
' ' The Poundkeeper's report was read, shewing receipts £5 It was resolyed that Poundkeoper and Ranger bo paid their fees. Cr Groy moved, Cr Haigh seconded—That W. Pole be re-elected Inspectgr of Nuitances, at the same salary as heretofore, ' Cr Wakelin moved as an amendmentThat applications bo called for at a fixtd salary of £l2 per annum, .. . The amendment was carried, The meeting then adjourned.'
