The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1881

The four-weekly returns of railway traffic up to November 13th indicate a slight improvement in the business done compared with the previous returns, The Chrisfcclmrcli Press, analysing the results, reports that for the period up to October 16th the," receipts only amounted-to ,£56,00!), and the expenditure stood at' £40,056. For. the time under notice the receipts were £60,596, and the expenditure wiip £37,273 j that is to say, the receipts have inerecsecV by over £iooo, while the expenditure is actually nearly £2OOO less than it was for the previous four weeks.' Tho net result, therefore, is an improvement of about £7OOO, as compared with the'transactions for the four weeks ending October 16 th. The increase is mainly confined to the Middle Island lines, This is manifest from the fact that for the-period ending October ,16th the railways, in the North Island produced £13,306, while for the next four weeks , the .receipts were £13,871. During the. former period only 387 -miles of line were open for traffic, while for the.latter for two wcoks there were 399 and for the, i next 404 miles In operation, ' Tho increased mileage in tho North is .in consequence of the opening of a further extension of the Wellington'railway, and .the commencement of traffic on the Whangarei-Kamo line of live miles, It is on tho Middle Island linos, as we havo said, that the traffic shows the largest improvement, On the Amborly Kingston main lino the rooeipt for the last four weeks were- £45,581, as coinpa, led with £60,729 for the previous period, the traffic on the Grevmouth, Westpovt, Nelson and Picton branchesremaining nearly stationary. Analysing the traffic on the ArabcrleyKingston line move closely we'find that there is a marked improvement on the Christcurchureh section, the receipts rising from £9203 to . £10,524. On the Lytteltonto Christ-church branch there was a slight increase. The same was the case with the Oxford, Eyreton and Southbridga branches.. The -Oamaru section showed a small increase, and so did tho Albury and Ngapara branches, while the Waimate and Dnntroon showed a slight falling off. Tho receipts on tho Dimedi'ii section rose from £8866 to £9358; those on the Dunedin-Port Chalmers branch wero practically the same,- The Invercargill section showed an increase of.abjut £SOO, and the Invercargill, Bluff, and Riverton branches also returned something more than during the previous four weeks.
