POLICE COURT.

CARTERTON, FRIDAY.

[Before H, S. Wardeu, ;Esq., R.M.. Burton Boys, and Lister-Kaye, J.P.'s.j case of Stanford v Tremewan, for attempted rape, was heard at Carterton on Friday morning, Mr W. Parker appeared to prosecute, and in deference to a request from him the case was heard with doped doors, Mr Beard defended the acoußed.

_ From the hearing it appeared that sufficient evidence was not adduced to maintain the, serious charge of rape, but the Bench, in dismissing the case, intimated to the plaintiff that, there was sufficient prima facie evidence to charge the defendant with an assault.

Mr Beard's defence of the prisoner, which was heard in open Court, was a very vigorous one. ■
