THE MEMORIES OF THE PAST.
The last survivor of the Battle 1 of Trafalgar is, it appears, now in Paris in very straitened circumstances. His name is. Henri Blanc; he was born at' Prussians in the Ande, in 1871, and in 1805, at the age of 18, embarked on the Mont Blanc, a vessel comprised in the spuadron commanded by Admiral Yilleneuve,. Subse- ■, quently he was taken a. prisoner toEn'srland, whei'o ; ho remained r till , 1811. • Although he is now in his ninetyifourth . year, lie has all his faculties) it is said, his powers of memory being singularly strong,- ■ Not only does he remember the names of all the. different vessels engaged on the memorable day, but he loves to reoall to those around him every • episp.de of the battle of which he was an eye-witness, The pensiou allowed this? old sailor amounts in all to about £lO a year, and a third of this pittance" is served to him from a fund set apart to provide for the wants of such as belonged to the army or ;• navy under the First Empire. No doubt he receives little gifts from persons who : visit him to hear him relate his souvenirs"' • of the battle of Trafalgar; but,'as it : " seems nevertheless he is in great want, something might be done to provide him. with a modest competency for the remainder of his days.
