Roydliouse, re a building erected near his.residence by Mr Hamrrierichj- .asking 1 th'e v Council .to consider ! the removal ;of "Biime; from Secretary Wairarapa Hospital, asking for the rates paid to be remitted. ■ ' Or Smith, moved, Or Fuller seconded— That the; rates-paid by i the Hospital be remitted jis a donation.—Carried. " - ReMrjW/Ji Roydhouse's ...Or (iray-said'the .buildini;. referred to • was aB good and convenient as could be built; it was,oh principle as the ones at the railway-station, the only difference being that-it was constructed of wood instead of, iron] ' ■ Or Hammerich explained that the urinal was covered,-and it was-impossilile' to say whether it was in a wrongj, position or not, or likely to interfere with Mi- Roydhouse in-the manner lie thinks. He wished to avoid causing annoyance '.to anyone, and before deciding upon the position heihad taken perhaps even a higher" opinion .on the matter than;.thß„Oouncil could get, ~C l ' Gray .moved, Cr Udy lhat Crs : Kempton, Wakelin, Fuller, and ihompson be, appointed a Committee to report' upon Mr Roydhouee's letter at next meeting. Or Smith moved as an amendment, Or Thompson seconded—That a Committee -be not/appointed,.but that the Inspector of Nuisances,be instructed to report upon' the building.--In moving this am'endment, Or.Snntli said he-thought it was ,the. Inspector's duty. If the" resolution ™ carried;,lie expected a Committee of Councillora.would .be formed to report upon : every little nuisance brought under the notice of the Council. ■ " Or'Wakelin would be sorry to see the amendment carried, as ib would, only prothe thing. It was the position of the'building they wanted to know about, not the state of cleanliness. | .Or Thompson 1 withdrew his name from the'.Committee,; as he thought it was the Ins.peotor« duty to report upon such I things. -; • \
, Or,Kempton asked, before the amsndpit, whether the Councillors mentioned at a Committee could .rote. His, Worship ruled they could if they thought'fit. The amendment was then put, three yoking.for- it and five against.it. The resolution was therefore declared carried The report of the Works Committee was then read and adopted, onjhe motion of Or Smith, seconded by.Or Fuller The Committee reported that it .had been decided to alter the position of culvert to across the main road,' to open in watortable between the Town Hall and Church, and that the tender of John Udy at £lO 10s; was • accepted.' . Arrangements had been made for slabbing the pound,- repairs to West and Ohurcjwfreets, and.clearing the' water-table in Main-street. Also, that they considered a man with a horse and cart would do all that is necessary to Kurutawhiti Road in two or three days. Or Wakelin's notice of motion was then read, but, not, finding a seconder, lapsed. • Or Thompson/thought the questions asked by Or Wakelin could be answered by the Town Clerk at any time, and had already been answared by the balancesheet,, 1 .... —' .1 '';•'
Or Kempton asked Jus Worihip if any Councillor requiring information was bound to ask tor it by resolution- or notice of motion,- ' ' • /i
His Worship said such was not necessary. The Town Clerk had always courteously given any information required, whether in Oounoil or no, and he thought any Councillor could get what information he wanted, v
' Smith thought the notice of motion was uncalled for, as the information had been given and could be obtained .'again. But he did not see what the coat'of collecting the river board rates had to do with the Council, _ Or Wakelin said he would ask that the information required in the meaning of his notice of motion be furnished at next meeting, " His object was" to see exactly what- the Town Clerk actually got, He did not think that the: same amount ;should be paid for spending £SOO as would be for spending £BOO. now the subsidies, were stopped. He did not mean a reduction m the town Town Clerk's salary alene, or that nny should, be-reduced anymore than printing, <k, butjhere could not be the amount of work to do; now the subsidies were stopped, and the Council must'pay-accordingly. """ Or Udy thought'the affair was quite out of order. ■ If the Councillors did not know what they paid the Town Clerk they ought to ; he ■ coiild always : get necessary information, " i Or..Gfray said; it would -porhapgrbe -as well for a statement to be'laid on'the table, but it would have been .better for Or Wakfelin to ascertain' the .different amounts paid, and then, if- found l iiee«asary, propose a.direct reduotion. The Clerk was instructed to "table the necessary ihforMioii' and ; tMf meeting 1
