The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1880.
A division of opinion on the "modus operandi" for exterminating rabbits is displayed between the Trustees of the various Rabbit Districts of the Wairarapa, in which the minority have, we are disposed to believe, the best of the argument. The Wainuibru and otaria ; districts desire to appoint conjointly an; inspector, the Awhea district, on the other hand, will not co-operate with the'former in creating such an officer, but has already set a ranger to work, The Awhea district goes in for prompt action and poisoning right off, the other districts are willing to wait for the inspector and reports. It is obvious that any time lost now in getting to work will lessen the chance of extermination. This is the best season of the year for laying poison, and the present high price of skins is favorable to carrying on the work of annihilation at a cheap rate, The question arises therefore whether it is worth while to expend money on inspectors at a time when/every sixpence available is wanted fto killing. It is evident, too, that while a ranger must necessarily act as an inspector as well as in the capacity of rabbit-killer, an inspector would not demean himself to killing with his own hand, It appears to us that Trustees will obtain from a ranger who is employed to both inspect and destroy actual value in return for all the money laid out. It is, however, questionable on the other hand whether the salary of an inspector would be. recouped by' actual work done. The sequel will probably show which system gets the greater amount of work done in proportion to the money expended. It is extremely probable that the Wainuioru and Otaraia districts will carry out their determination to appoint an Inspector, and the result of the labors of this officer will be easily contrasted with the work done by the ranger in the Awhea district. Next winter experience will have taught the different districts which is the more economical method of working the Act As far as we can judge the chances are in favor of the Awhea plan being preferred.
