To the Editor of the-WIiEARAPi Dah»y. • ; - ■ • ;•■ ;...,-. -Greytown, May 5,

--J SIR.-The letter gigued," P. R Wood" in your ; to-day's- issue I think fairly expresses the feeling majority of the Greytown public in respect of the action of; the Council in repudiating the amount paid by you to Mr Frethey, and, although I did .not think such a trifle would make my friend " blush," I certainly think that the Council have acted very unfairly, and the Mayor very thoughtlessly, otherwise he would not have shown partiality by giving his two votes on one side. He. must have, known, from town talk that the majority of his constituents were in favor of the amount being.paid. . j

Doubtless the co3fc nf. forming the Borough seems a large sum, but the work charged for was done, ; and those engaged should be paid. ; My;opinion [if I may express it-it'a gratia) is that if the claim were'sent to the Colonial Secretary he would state it should have been paid by the Borough, Oh, for afewgood men in our'township. Unless some good mon. crop up soon, slur upon, slur will be cast upon : us, and (he credit of the district jepordised. ; . . ,

I agree .with tlie first part of Mr Wood's letter, and as sharing the expenses of a test case is concerned, .but cannojt commend him for his liberality. ' Guinei, cheques are not so' plentiful as to be cast broadcast. I symp tthise with you, anil ■ will, at the proper time, sympathise with you, like the Yankee, with a contribution if necessary, but I certainly think Mr Wood must have something else in view "from his burgesses." My impression is that the matter should be referred to the Colonial Secretary; this could be done without expense, and the matter possibly be set at rest. We have heard a good, deal about " Be first iust, and then generous." Let us strain every nerve to get justice first-failing that we can be generous.

lam, &c, Neutral ,". [The Colonial Secretary has something else to do than wash small pieces of dirty linen for Greytown. The Mayor of Greytown was quite right in recording two votes according to his convictions in the matter. Mr Wood's action contrasts favorably with that -of some of his fellow-citizens.-Ed. W.D.].
