The criminal calendar consists of 18 cases:—Two charges cutting and wounding, one horse-stealing, five highway robbery, one manslaughter, and one of wilful murder. NELSON. \ Monday. In reference to the charge of rape the other day, when the Magistrate blamed the police for bringing the oase, it appears they were misled by the girlj who broke down in cross-examination. At an inquest hold at the Lunatic Asylum to-day, on the. body of -.the late inmate Olara Palmer, who died yesterday, the jury found that the deceased had died from exhaustion, resulting in a suicidal mania. It appeared she had injured herself by getting into a copper of boiling water. The jury added a rider that in their, opinion the female attendants at the Asylum are not sufficient. HAWBRA. Monday. The Commissioners had a very, satisfactory interview with Titokowaru, Hokere, and other important chiefs. They regard the native difficulty as now at an end.
The constabulary leave Otakea to-day, and camp six miles further north. CHRISTOHURCH. Monday. Templeton, while going a trial yesterday, fell over a cow, and died from the injuries this morning. The Christchuroh infantry battalions proceeded to the racecourse this morning by train, the cavalry and artillery went by road. The town is full of visitors. NAPIER. Monday. The bar is still very bad. The outward English mails were left behind, as the Rotorua could not be communicated with, Communication with most districts has been restored, but coaches are unable to run through the Seventy-mile Bush. Mr Tanner lost 1,500 sheep, and Col. Whitmore.2oo by floods. '
