MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.
A meeting of the Board was held on Saturday, , Present - Messrs Bennett (Chairman), Buchanan, Donald, arid Chamberlain,
Minutes of. the previous, meeting were :ead and confirmed. ■
The following correspondence was like' wise read:— '•
Letter from Mr G-. Moore,'as to an impassable portion of the line of road lead-' ing through the native reserve.at Eparamai, No 6 Ward, and requesting that a sum might be granted toimprove it; ; • One from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, ae to the maturity of certain properties in the Taueru. Survey' District. One from Messrs"' Bacon, and Wrigley, aa to the removalof timber and ;other material lying 1 /oh the main line "of road, .-'■.'■■

stating;, that the amount of subsidy due to the Board hadih'oeii paid into the bank; One froth MessreCampbell; McKenzie, and Livingstone',-: again urging the Board to open' ; -iroad-to ; ;give Mr Campbell access td-his property.- '■':■ One'from Clerk of West "County, acknowledging, receipt of account due. to the Board, and promising to attend to iit.. ■,;.,;,;,,,,/.,,:,,.,/..,;. . vr /->v;■■;One,from Ilnder-Secreta'ry Public Works,' stating that some misconception appeared to.exist, with reference.to the: ■meaning of' the 'word ''gazette" when used'in section 22 of" The Public Works Act, 1876," aud stating that definite and special meaning is given to it by-section 3 of«' The Public Works Act, 1876." One from the Board'B Engineer, giving an estimate of the cost of the necessary, ■repairs to the Taueru road. '. •"';.".' One from Mrs McKenzie, denying having filled up a drain past her place at Lower Maiifiia with stones.

Mr Buchanan reported that Mr R. Cockburn threatened to stop the road, from the sides of which he had been requested to remove the willows growing. Mr George Duncan waited on the Board/and requested that a track might be cut so as to give him and other settlers in the Waipoua Block access to their properties, :
Mr R. Tankeraley also attended, and requested that some alterations might be made on the line of road kid off by Mr Knowles leading to his other proporties ontheOpaki; The following resolutions were then passed ; That the account sent in by Mr Scan* lan be not paid until Mr Donald, the Warden for No. 6 Ward obtain further information regarding it. That before paying', Mr Beard, Mr Buchanan be requested to make enquiry with reference to certain charges. That the Engineer wait on Mrs McKenzie and Mr A. Cockburn with referenoe to the Btones laid down on the roads leading past their places, and report at next meeting. That Mjbs Jeans be informed that as the Crown Grants of her properties had not matured when the chain road was laid off, the Board intended to olaim the whole chain, and that she is not entitled to any compensation for the ground taken.... : .
That Mr Beard be requested to give his opinion as to the gazetting of certain roads within the district.
That Mr George Moore be authorised to spend £5 in making the road passable to which his letter refers,
•That. Mr Donald be empowered to employ a man to keep the roads in repair in No. 6 Ward during the winter. That the Clerk write to MrO. Gampbell, and inform him that the Board's present finauoial position will not admit of their undertaking the work applied for,
.That the 26th clause of "The Impouri-, ding Act, 1874," be brought'into forbe in the district, Which is as follows'-;-r-'-.' : '' .;,''lt .shall be -lawful for any. person being the oooapier of 'any laud- adjoining anypblic.highway to impound in'thenearest publio pound any oattle whioh may be found, wandering at large in suoh. public highway^aiid'■• any cattle so impoundeds]iallbe>'dealfc with in the same manner as oattle impounded under' the provisions of the eight section of the Act,providing always, that, the-provision's of tWssection shall.only<apply to-roads in res'pectof which any' Highway Board mayhave passed a resolution, as provided in the ninetieth section of 'The Highways 101,1874.'" 8 '
That Mr Bremner inspect the works applied for by Mr Duncan, and report on the same, and in the meantime Mr Duncan ascertain what amount the settlers holding land in the distriot will subscribe towards the work, and that he also attend' to the application of Mr Tankersley. That a special meeting of the Board be held on Saturday, the 3rd day of April, for the purpose of making a rate of Is in the £ on the valueof rateable property within the district. PAYMENTS MADE. ■ '
