Ido not; doubt' the veracity of Mr Bonnet's statement,' but does;'it prove that this is the.usual freight charge to ..Castle Point? If Mr Bennet will tax his memory a little hemay, possibly remember that just a year . ago Messrs Keurick & Co. undertook to deliver goods at Tenui from Wellington at the. rate of £3lss per ton, this amount'to include freight, landing, and haulage. 12 miles. Many_ settlers guaranteed[to support Mr Kenrick, who has since' darned out the arrangements to the satisfaction of his customers. ,1 imagine Mr Bennet did not support this enterprising firm or he would riot'have paid so dearly for his potatoes. 'With jmgard : to -.Mr Beunet's loss of bjue.gum rails, itniaypossibly be the. fault of something else'than Castle Point. Perhaps he thinks accidents never hippen on railway lines. How about the slips on the Eimutaka not long ago ? A number of people did not get' their potatoes, ifcc., then. Doubtless if t Mr Bennet's woolbales or othergoods-liad'beeh delayed on i that occasion, land carriage would have been all that was execrable. I v.,; I do not desire to charge Mr Bennet with inconsistency re the advantages of water carriage. I cannot but recollect that gentleman, together with others, propounding a scheme with a view of forming a. company to get a steamer'to trade into f the Whareama river. Water carriage 'surely could : riot have been such a' "bete noir" to this individual at that time as it.appears to be at present, lam obliged to Mr Bennet for his desire to see me out of tho district, also for his compliment re my limited ideas. Perhaps they are rather narrow. One small and trifling thing, however, occurs to me, i.e., that it may be of eminent utility and benefit to the manager of Larigdale station and its owners to delude or. intimidate (by closing the Black Hill road) the public into making a road to their (Elder & Co. 's) firewood bush at the head of the Mungapakeha. If ,M Bennet wjll condescend to look atjthe ■end of-iiiy last letter (Jan. 17th), he will see that there is no. desire that lie and fad
