CARTERTON

(from our own correspondent) Dec. 29,1879. The picnic to the children attending the Sabbath School of the local Wesleyan Church has been held to-day instead of on Friday last, when the inclemency of the weather stopped it being held. Mr H. Callister's paddock has been well pa trunised throughout the day, and there has been n succession of swinging and other sports that are generally found in the ascendant at meetings of a similar nature I regret to have to record the death this iimming •.[ Mr James Smith, an old and well-known settler. He was walking do.vu White's Line, a little above Hay's j Hi tel, when some buys hard by saw him full. As he did not get up they procured the assistance of some men who were working at a drain a short distance off, who, on examination, believed him to be dead, and this was confirmed on the arrival uf medical aid. The cause of death is presumed to lie apoplexy, but this will be verified by the inquest, which I understand is tn take place, to-morrow at 2 p.m. Another settler was thrown out of a trau near Ango.'e the blacksmith's, to-day, and the wheel passed over his shoulder, but beymid a slight bruising no; damage was done.
