CHURCH MEETING.
A large meeting was held in St Matthew's Schoolroom last evening for the election of a vestry in the newly constituted Parish. Mr (i. Fannin opened the proceedings hy reading tlio authority from the Bishop to act as his Churchwarden and the notice convening the meeting. He also reviewed the steps taken for the formation of a Parish. The Rev Mr Teakle had waived his right of notice in order that the Parish might at once be constituted, and his license had accordingly been withdrawn. Ihe business before them was the election of a Prishioners' Churchwarden and a Vestry, Every vestryman appointed must be a Communicant; but with respect to the definition of a communicant he had been advised to accept the assurance of each candidate. He also read the regulations under which the election would be conducted. Mr C. A. Vollance proposed, and Mr Bennett seconded—Mr John Valentine Smith as Parishioners' Church Warden.
Mr Quartly proposed, and Mr Cox seconded—Mr Parsons as Churchwarden. On the motion of. Mr Bennett Mr Garland Mr Boddington w.ere'appointed scrutineers. The ballot was then taken with the following result .-Mr J. Y. Smith, 32; Mr Parsons, 19 Mr J. Y. Smith was therefore declared duly elected,—(Applause). l Mr J. Y. Smith briefly expressed his sense of the confidence placed in him by the parishioners, in electing him as their churchwarden. The following candidates were then proposed as a Vestry : Proposer. Seconder, Dr Beard J. Paytou F. G, Moore A. Bish/. Do Do J. C.Boddington Do Do J. Catt Do Do D, Donald J. C. Boddington A. Carr Rhodes Donald Do Do F. 6. Moort Do Do W.Parker F.G.Moore W.Sellar J. Mr G. Russoll withdrew his name, as it was not his intontion to come forward, MrG. Russell asked the Chairman to ascertain from each of the candidates if they were communicants,
The Chairman pointod out that the challenge not having been made at the proper time the voting must go on. Some discussion then took place, the Chairman reiterating his opinion that the time for challenging had passed. The result of the poll was as follows, the Chairman declaring the first ten dulv elected' J. Mr J. Y, Smith proposed a vote of thanks to the late Churchwardens and Vestry for their past servicos. Mr Donald Donald seconded the proposition, which was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks was carried on the motion of Mr Everett to the scrutineers, Mr G. Russell returned thanks 011 behalf of the Churchwarden and late Committee for the compliment paid to it. He claimed that the late Committee had been hardworking and industrious, He also spoke highly of the Verger, who also deserved their thinks. The meeting concluded with % vote of thanks to the Chairman, moved by Mr Bennett and carried by acclamation.
