CARTERTON.

(HiOM 0U1! OWN COKEESPONBENI) Dec. 22,1879. The first open-air drill of the Volunteers last Monday was anything but a decided success, as the evening was damp and unpleasant, and consequently the attendance was limited. I would remind your readers that the monthly inspection parade will take place to-morrow, the 30th instant, when it is hoped a good muster will answer to the roll call, or I am afraid some of our men will find it haul work to make up their monthly inspection parades, while others are running it very close for their company drills for the year.

The accident that happened to one of our settlers last Wednesday morning about the time the coach came down, though serious at the time, has, I understand, under the able attention of Dr Campbell been efficiently met, and the sunever is on the fair road to complete recovery.

. f' 1 ® last Thursday evening, in aid of the Knell Fund, was, I am very nappy to say, a most decided success, as there will be a balance of something over , aftci ' sll attendant liabilities have been met. All the morceaux, both vocal and instrumental were well rendered and met with well merited applause; but as the performers were as a whole amateurs on y, I lefrain from notifying any special selection, as I know from past experience many a one who will g i ve their services oi a good cause do not care for newspaper criticism. After the concert, dancing was started, and it must have been between five and six o'clock ere the last of the company left the hall.
