FEATHERSTON.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT],

Dec. 19th. I think we may, at last, consider that a successful sale has been held in the airarapa Me Yards, for on Wednesday through the indomitable perseverance of Mr Wood, a goodly number of stock of all lands was offered to the numerous buyers and sold at fair prices. There is no doubt but the yards will do well under the present management. The entrance fees being done away with will enable sellers to offer their stock with greater confidence, and buyers will know that an additional percentage wiil not be required of them, over and above the reasonable sale value, to cover the cost of a mere entrance fee. Fat Cattle were knocked down at an advance over £8 j heifers and steers, l|etween £4 and £6; and horses were sold at almost any price from £1 to £l3.

Oui builders will shortly be busy again, A Residence is to be erected for our N.Z. Bank manager, and other improvements are in contemplation elsewhere, labor's hotel is in course of erection, and promises to exceed the old building in size and accommodation, Certainly pe"ople here need not go far for a drink. We have four hotels and the station refreshment room already, and if one or two energetic persons would build as many more hotels we would then probably have enough, seeing that our population is still under 700 persons all told. Yesterday the children from the Upper Hutt school were treated to a trip to Peatherston by train, and an eleven from our local school met a similar number of them in a game of cricket. The picnic was held in Mr W. Lucena's paddock, and while the game was going on the girls and visitors were thoroughly entertained in an adjoining paddock. The result of the game \m against the visitors, whose last wicket in the first innings fell for 13 runs while the Featherston boys made 37. In the second innings the Hutt boys ran up I their score to U, leaving their opponents only 8 runs to beat them. This they did with 2 runs aud 9 wickets to spare. The State School examination closed here on Wednesday evening, with a verv satisfactory result. On Saturday evening the Committee will meet to receive the report from the headmaster, full particulars of which I will forward to you in my next, The children are to be regaled with a picnic on Monday next.
