LICENSING COURT.
(Before Messrs H. S. Wardell, J. C Vallance, J. Bennett, and H. H. Beetham, Commissioners.) An application from Mr Harvey for an V hotel to be erecttd opposite the Post \A, Office, Masterton, was considered, ** Mr Bunny appeared for the applicant, and Mr Skipper opposed on behalf of Mr Cotbett. A plan of the proposed building, show •ng accommodation to the extent of fifty rooms, was laid before the Court. Mr Skipper objected to the application on the ground that the hotel accommodation of the Borough was adequate and ■ lie police corroborated his statement Mr Wardell stated that the present accommodation m the four hotels in the •trough was one hundred and eight bed rooms. ° . Mr Bunny argued that as Featherston supported four hotels, Masterton ought W. 7 'l be , al)le to support a greater number 7 e al ßo pointed «mt that the completion •t the railway would increase the demand •or accommodation. The Commissioners decided that in the present state of things further hotel
accommodation was not required in the Borough, und refused the application. The Chairman regretted that the application had been opposed by one who had ii direct personal interest in the trade. A complaint was lodged by the police against the manner in which the Marquis of Nonnanby Hotel, Carterton, was conducted, The inquiry was adjourned for fourteen days. The Chairman said that the police report of the Kail way Hotel was hardly satisfactory, though no complaint was lodged, and cautioned the landlord to exercise more care, The Court then adjourned.
