The foundation stone of the new Court of Justice was laid to-day by the Hon. }'. Whitaker, Attorney-General and R. W. Grand Master of North Island, with Masonic ceremonies. This was the grandest display of its kind ever seen here, Fully four thousand per pie assembled. There were over five hundred ladies, for whom raised scats had been prepared, and over one hundred and fifty Masons in regalia, many being from other parts of the colonies. All the local volunteer forces assisted at the ceremony, which was very imposing. The day was beautifully fine and generally observed as a holiday. CHMSTCHUECK Monday. Albert Jmkson was this morning sen? fenced to eighteen months' imprisonment with bard labor for three aggravated assaults on young girls. IKVEBOAEGILL. Monday, Donald Mackay was arrested this morning at Mataura, charged with arson. He was arrested some time since on a similar charge, but discharged owing to want of evidence. The police are now in possession of direct evidence, which will be taken at the gaol on Thursday. GRAHAMSTOWN. Saturday. The Advertiser reporter has just returned from a visit to the Alburnia mine, and is satisfied that the prospects are good fora month to come at least. 'Shares aro somewhat easier, and business has been done at 72s 6d.
AUCKLAND. Saturday. A very powerful meeting of the Amatour Athletic Club was held in the Domain to" day. The various events, for which handsome prizes were offered, called forth good competition. The cable given by the Government to the Lyttelton Harbor Board was successfully laid to-day by Dr Lemon, between Godley Heads, and the signal station, across the harbor, the distance being two miles.
