ADVENTURE WITH AN OCTOPUS.
J. Small, Government diver at Belfast (in Australia), nearly lost his life through being seized by an ootopus, He was repeating his eSorts to dislodge a rock when his left hand was clutched in a hole by a marine monster. He was unable to reach the life line, but eventually got hold of an iron bar with one of his feet. On account of his peculiar, position, he could only deal blows overhanded, with the other hand into the hole, durin* which time the.octopus had increased its grip It was twenty minutes before Small could' release himself. He had the greatest difficulty in keeping his f ee t down, asthe air was pumped through the interior of dress and inflated it, and if his feet had got uppermost he would soon have become insensible. Even if he could have succeeded in reaching the life line it must nave resulted in his arm being broken or pulled out; His hand was shocked terribly and he describes the agony as dreadful from the arms of the octopus pulling. The remains of the octopus measured, eight feet across. The affair oocurred in the river Moyne,
