AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY.

(m PRESS AGENOY.)

(PEE ARRAWATA AT BLUM'.)

Meibourne, Nov. 5,

There has. been nothing but raci» heard about during the week. Melbor is filled with visitors from other colou and the country, and the attendant Flemington has even exceeded that o; former years. The arrangements on thi course are improved, and nothing can nov be more complete. Fortunately, we hat fine weather for both the Derby and Cuf days. Both races have been in the nature of a surprise. Suwarrow's victory for th« Derby was as good a thing for the bookmakers as Darriwell's winning the Cup, for neither was heavily backed. Caspian and Nelly carried the bulLd-jta money for the Derby, while Riverton, Suwarrow, and Wellington were the princpl Cup favorites. Sweetmeat ran b6>W for the fastest time yet recorded in Australia, which was 3minutes 18|sec., and Suwarrow third, so that the public confidence was not far misplaced; but Savanaka was nowhere. Suwarrow led from the start, and was in front? for a mile and three-quarters, when he wa3 overhauled by Darriwell and Sweetmeat. It was a very pretty field, and had the time been a few seconds slower, a number of horses would have been in the race. Of course there was a good deal of cheering at the Yictorian horse's winning,: but the bookmakers got the best of the money. It is stated tliat the attendance yesterday was little short of 100,000. The ladies' dresses were not quite as expensive, but were withal in good taste, and otherwise there was nothing to show but what this is a most prosperous colony.
