The cable-repairing steamer Agnes recovered three knots ef the old cable, and subsequently five knots in good condition, which, with the five miles aboard, gives over thirteen miles—enough to enable them to repair the defective portions and take a different route for laying that portion which is now so much damaged, apparently by corrosion, in consequence of being laid over ground chemically injurious to the cable, supposed to be sulphur springs or copper, impregnated reefs, The Agnes will take soundings before laying the new bight down.
