LOWER WHAREAMA.

[FROM OUR OWN COIUvESPONDENT], Oct. 22. fe. No steps seem to have been taken at tm last Road Board meeting re clearing tflL slips off the Mungapakeha road. °Atk" * previous meeting Mr Bennett suggested as temporary expedient th.it the points of the slips (funds being inadequate for the removal of the whole) should be cleared away, so as to enable drays, &c, to pass "long. This idea certainly lias a good deal to recommend it. The slips now beinj,' fairly hard, would not come down on the road in the way they would have done some months ago if disturbed then ; iind by removing some len feet of such the road would be rendered fit for traffic at a small cost. In any case these portions of the slips must be removed sooner or later, and it would be so much done to-

The Casllo road having inpiovcd somewhat of Into, tlio timber for the erection of Mr Miller's now hotel ia being hauled through.' I understand Mr Russell isthe contractor, anddottbtlcas will, with his usual energy, anon yet the building completed. It ia to tic built on the sito of the old stand and will consist of eighteen roams. There has been it groat deal of grumbling in consequence of the hotel* burnt down not being replaced sooner, but when it ia considered that the roada were in such a bud state that many sottiers had to puck goods on horseback, it can scarcely be expected that heavy timber could be obtained. 'lhe ratepayers here, at any rate, should bo thankful that the haulage was not the result would have been roads cut up and rendered impassable for a much longer period, to the detriment of producers and all persons requiring stores, -I' an > sorry to have record the serious illness of Mrs Cripps, one of the oldest and most respected residents here. La'e accounts, however, are that she is slightly better. Another old inhabitant of \he Wellington district. Mrs Payne, hna been ilVfor some time, and so seriously that this lady had to be removed to Mnsterton for medical treatment 'during the last week, Some time ago the inhabitants here subscribed towards the maintenance of a resident doctor, but being unfortunate in the individual* selected to minister to our ills, the plan- was given up. Now that sickness is in our midst I imagine that it is the feeling of many people that a resident medical man is a want that it would be well to take into serious consideration and relieve. One. very great drawback against a really good doctor coming here is the want of a suitable place for him to live in. The building of a residence certainly should be within the powers of the inhabitants here, especially if some large landowner would generously give an acre or two of land as a Bite. The Foresters have a doctor who mnkes periodical visits. This, though of grout use to the mom bum of that society, by no means covers all the wants of people in this matter. If tho contribution paid by the Foresters could be calculated on, I think a sum of from £350 to £4OO might bo forthcoming towards the maintenance of any doctor of fair attainments nnd steady habits, who ohoae to settle nmom; us.
