The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1879.

A political deadlock is an unpleasant contingency, but if the outcome of one be the restoration of Constitutional Government in New Zealand we need not fear it. Parties are now ro evenly balanced that the public business cannot be despatched at present in any satisfactory manner. Hall's lions cannot legislate, nor can Macandrew's unicorns do ought but fight. It is but justice to the unicorns to admit that they have displayed both skill and courage, and that while a chance of victory or a shadow ol one remain they will fight for the crown cake thev have lost, . We only hope'that the lions are animated with an equal amount of dotermination. If the Hon John Hall has plenty of backbone he will not,

come what may, give way an inch. Tho result must bo victory for him if k Holds Ills own fearlessly and daunt-' tody. Tlie fact that'his party numbers half ihc members of ;i House returned under the auspice of a hostile Ministry demonstrates clearly that the country is with him, and that the majority of 'the electors of the Colony have confided their interests to his hands, Not only are the interests of the majority in number of the electors committed to his bauds, but the interests themselves constitute probably ninetenths of tho real and personal estate of the Colony. The unicorns at the late election in a very open and marked manner appealed to the working classes only for their return and in many instances were successful in deluding with specious promises the rank and file of the constituencies. We do not undervalue the rights and privileges which working men ought to claim in a free country. We do not set property and wealth above flesh and blood, but we hold that flesh ami blond, if it is to prosper in New Zealand, must ally itself with properly ami wealth. It must drink fifim this pool, hut it will not slake its ihirst liy vilifying the waters therein. The unicorns have stirred up the mud in the lions' fountain, and turned the people away from it. Their own.well, however, is shallow and empty, and 'hough some believe that Sir Geor«e Cli'ov can in some miraculous manner .strike, a rock and make the waters gush forth, his nmgic power has as yet been restricted to promises. The country awl time arc both in favor of the Hall lions, provided they prove staunch and true. The present occasion is a crucial test of the fitness of the Hon. John Hall as a political leader. Should he fight while h e has an inch of vantage STound left, he is the man for New Zealand. Should he yield a single hair's breadth to the pgrsistent assaults of the unicorns, another chief will be required to lead the constitutional party in the Colony.
