John Henderson, the well known railway engineer, is seriously ill. Totally insensible. W. Grant, of the Armed Constabulary, charged John Goddard with assaulting him ; but on hearing the evidence it appeared that Grant behaved in a most insulting manner to Goddard's wife and got knocked clown by her husband. Grant was fined 25s and costs, with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. In the House of Representatives, Eowen gave notice for a list of all appointments made by the Government last session.
The Government promised to take steps to compel lodging-house keepers to provide means of escape for lodgers in case of fire. The Government will make provision for prospectors for gold in districts not already proclaimed goldfields. Fisher said the government did not intend to pay operators and the other officers in the Telegraph Department overtime. The Government intend to introduce a Bribery Bill this session. Petition against the election of Tainui for the Southern Maori District was laid on the able. Hall called attention to the statement regarding himself in a letter in the New Zealander signed by J. C. Brown, in which he was charged with sending the Government steamer to carry gentlemen
for political-purposes from the South. The steamer happened to take the 'Frisco mail down, and accidentally brought these gentlemen up. The records would show it, He was also charged with offering J. C. Brown anything he liked to ask for his vote, He characterised this statement as an absolute, unblushing, unmitigated falsehood. Brown said if a committee was called for he would undertake to prove what he said or stand branded as he deserved; but he exonerated Gisborne and Hall, The no-confidence debate was resumed by the Hon. Fisher, who considered Hall's attack on the Ministry most wishy-washy. Murray charged the Ministry with extravagance in various matters. He considered the dissolution was uncalled for, and cost the country £IOO,OOO simply because half the House had no confidence in the Premier. It was not a question of policy before the country, but the trustworthiness of the members of the Ministry. In native affairs they were er.travagrant, mismanaged, &ml bungled, while the Premier very discreditably excited class feeling, He would not on this occasion WiJk one, but would vote against the Ministry. Burron supported the Government. He said Macaughan and Masters were returned to support the' Government. Masters followed, maintaining he was returned as an independent candidate and would vote conscientiously. He found men in the Opposition whom he felt he could trust as membeis of the Govern-
meat. The House adjourned at 5.30 p.m. till 7.30. AUCKLAND. Wednesday. Mr Newman, one of the defeated candidates for City West, has filed a petition against Messrs Wallis and Hurst for alleged bribery, corruption, and illegal practices in the late election. He has given surety, himself in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each, to prosecute the petition. The petition went to Wellington in the Taiaroa at five this morning, accompanied by an affidavit of Messrs Whitaker and Russell, solicitors. In banco to-day, before His Honor Mr Justice Gillies, Mr S. Hesketh moved for a decree compelling Thomas H. Mabin to render an account of his management of the .Phoenix Insurance Company since 1876. Owing to slight irregularity in the form of procedure, the matter was adjourned till the next sitting of the court in banco. CHRISTCHU.RCH. Wednesday. The Canterbury Cricket Association last night determined to write to the Australian clubs who played the New Zealand team last year, asking if any Australian team is coming to New Zealand this season. The Registrar's returns fnrChristchurch and district during September were— Births: Cuy, 69; district, 128. Marriages : Ciiy, 23; district, 14. Deaths: City, 20 ; district, 35. The deaths in the same period last year were—City, 18, district 11, The criminal session cf Supreme Court opens on Monday next, There are seven c.ises for trial, including charges of forgery , perjury, sheep-stealing, rape, and larceny. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, The customs revenue for the month ending September 20th was £47,870, against £02,996 collected during the same period of last year, showing a falling off of £15,125.

The evidence showed ihat she lived apart, from her husband, and on going to him for her allowance he kicked her, but not very severely.
The Eotomahanabrnught Bishop Neville and family. They were cordially received on arriving. A man named Johnston, who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the bay last nipht, was sentenced to seven clays' imprisonment for being drunk and disorderly. George Capslick, trustee in a bankrupt estate, who was arrested yesterday on a writ of attachment, was released to-day having filed his schedule.
