TINUI
' —♦— 1 [from our own correspondent! Sept. 24. Ihe weather up till yesterday has been remarkably fine; in fact, summer haa come upon us quite suddenly, and the change is appreciated by all-more especially the farmers, as this will be favorable. for the lambing season. A change had been threatening for some days, and yesterday and to-day we had glorious rain. ' This blessing came just in time, for the soil required it, and we would naturally conclude that every prospect pleases—with the exception, shall I say, of our rights in the way of a good main road. Referring to this matter of great importance, I see some of our energetic settlers are actively employed in obtaining signatures to the petition to Parliament. Aa the community at large are only too anxi- •' ous'to obtain an outlet, signatures and prayers for success will be readily obtained. Our roads improve gradually, but as the Highway Board, I hear, is not in a position to place the necessary labor to im-1 prove this state of affairs expeditiously, of I course tho improvement will be very fi slow. I see tenders are now called forfj metalling about thirty-five chains between S Tinui and the junction. This is to im- 8 prove some of the worst places. I Dray traffic has not yet commenced in I earnest, although I hear there is a deal of trading at Castle Point for this district The rate per ton for carriage from Castle . Point to Tinui is a most-expensive item, as £3 per ton is being charged. When it is taken into consideration that the distance is only twelve miles, the conclusion is that the road is not good. The Rev. MrGossett held divine service here last Sunday. As the weather was very fine the rev. gentleman was encouraged with a large congregation. On this occasion Miss Nicholls presided at the harmonium, As music renders the service so much more attractive, it is hoped that this young lady will be encouraged to continue. By-the-way, I see that the tithes are to be paid in Masterton. I wonder how the.settlers in East Wairarapa will appVjjfi having to go to Llasterton to pa) >s«» tax. Of course this means a trave) iffifl expense of at le;,st £3, to say uothAlgl loss of time-but then perhaps honor and glory of it. TtII
