As Pat took up the pen, exclamations rose behind him. "Pat's a writing. He's got a quill in his fist," cried one amazed rival. " Small good will it do him; he can't write wid it," exclamed another. They wero' dumbfounded when Murphy recorded his name in a bold round hand and declared, " That'll do," but recovering from their surprise, two of them shouted out together, "Ask him to write some one else's name, yer Honor." " Write my name, Murphy," said the Mayor.

" Write yer Honor's name!" exclaimed Pat. "Me commit forgery, and going into the police! No I can't do it, yer Honor. Pat was taken on at once.
