THE BOROUGH VALUATION FOR 1880.
To the Editor of the Waiiueafa Daily. Sir—l find that the Council has e'ected two sensible men as valuators for the Borough property for the ensuing year. As an owner of property, and having some of it unlet for a considerable period of the year, I am anxious to know if I have any relief from the rate made at the commencement of the year? By the Rating Act of 1876 it is stated that the "rateable value" of any property means the rent at which sucli property would let from year to year, deducting therefrom twenty per centum in the case of houses, buildings, and other perishable property, and ten per centum in the case of lands and other hereditaments, As there appears to be no end to the amount of rates to be levied upon the land, it is to be hoped that in the event of an amended Rating Act being brought before the next meeting of Parliament, some relief will be given to owners whose properties remain untenanted.—l am, &c. Ratepayer
