PLUMPING.

Sir,—The fallacy of' plumping' for any one candidate in the coming election does not appear to me to have been sufficiently clearly put before the electors of the district, and I therefore shall endeavor to do so. Two candidates must be elected, and therefore every electer has as it were, two votes—one for each, of two candidates. To vote for only one candidate called " {.lumping"—is simply throwing away a vote, and does not at all increase the chances of election of the candidate plumped for. For example : Suppose a large majority of the electors to be specially desirous of seeing Mr Bunny returned and to plump for him, being indifferent as to which of the other two got in ; it is evident that if the same majority couple with their vote one for Mr Beetham Mr Bunny's chance is not lessened - the number recorded in his favor stands the same, while those in Mr Beetham's would be relatively increased. Again, looking at the question from a party view, as of the three candidates two are anti-Greyites, and whether or not Mr Bunny is plumped for (he is plump enough already) one of these anti-Greyites is bound to be returned, An Eiectok,
