The Football Match, Wellington v. Christcluirch, to-day, was won by Wellington by one goal to one touchdown, after a very hard struggle. Canterbury fought desperately to avert defeat, and a maul in goal resulted in a touchdown, but in taking the try the ball bounced off a man's back, and the goal was thus lost. John McClenaghan, a member of the Police force, was charged with drunkenness and insubordination, The officers of the force giving him a good character, the Magistrate took a comiderate view of
the case, fining prisoner 10s or 24 hours on the chargo of drunkenness, and 203 each on the two charges of insubordination, or three days! imprisonment, The Magistrate said that if he knew the publican who supplied the policeman with liquor while in uniform, he would endeavour to prevent the renewal of his license, He would like to see a case, of the kind established against a publican as a cau» tion. Bryce received a vote of confidence. He condemned the Government strongly. He said that Ballance was only nominally responsible for the sins of the Government.
