Mr Wardell notifies that on Wednesday next he will make inquiry into the truth j of the allegations set forth in a communication addressed to the Colonial Secretary with reference to the petition against constituting Carterton a Borough. The County Council have authorised the Engineer to expend £l5O on the Waiohine river works at Greytown. This is far from sufficient, writes a correspondent for the works that are necessary, but every little helps. Some stone broken off a reef a few miles from Masterton—the exact locality of which, however, is not disclosed—was sent recently to the Government Analyst to be tested for gold and silver. The official report has just been received. It is to the effect that the quartz, on being tested, was found to contain 2dwts of gold and silver per ton of stone.
The late coach last evening had a spill between Greytown and Carterton. In passing some wagons in a narrow part of the road the outer edge of the road proved rotten, and the vehicle turned on its side. Mr Hik kept his hold on the horses till all the passengers were extricated. In a few minutes tho latter wero able to resume their seats more alarmed than hurt, and reached the end of their journey at the usual time without further misadventure.
