POLITICAL MEETING AT THE THAMES.

(l>Elt HtESS AGENCr.)

Gkahamstown, Saturday. A crowded and enthusiastic meeting was held at the Theatre Royal this evening ; Mr L. Ehrenfried in the chair.

Mr Adam Porter moved—That the thanks of the inhabitants of the electoral district of the Thames are due to Sir G. Grey, Mr Sheehan, and the vest of the Ministry, for starting tho Thames and Waikato railway, ii having been done in accordance with law, and not as a political job, and a small share of public moneys long withheld from the district, It was a different matter to the railways constructed under the Atkinson and McLean Administration at Picton, Taranaki, and Westport, which were well-known jobs. The motion was seconded by Mr ville.

Mr William Carpenter supported the resolution warmly, Mr G. N. Brassßy moved—That the meeting form itself into a committee to carry out the resolution,. Ho believed Sir G, Grey was the ablest statesman in the colony, and Mr Sheehan only-second. He had thought of placing himself at tho service of the electorate; but neither himself nor the other gentlemen mentioned would think of standing against two such statesmen.

Mr Chas. Stevenson attempted to pass an amendment that the movement was premature; but the meeting would not hear him,

MrDenby said Mr Stevenson's opposition to Mr Sheehan was owing to that gentleman stopping certain land transactions.

Vociferous cheers for Grey, Sheehan, and the chairman closed the proceedings,
