MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of the above Board was held to-day. Present; Messrs Bennett (Chairman), Minclun, Chamberlain, Donald, Buchanan, and Beetham. The following correspondence was also received :

Letters from Mr Smith calling the attention to the fact that the natives residing at Gladstone had fenced across the road leading to Wainuiora, thereby causing great inconvenience. _ One from F. Jagerhorn calling attention to the almost impassaolo state of the Wainuaoru West road, and requesting that something might be done to improve it. One from Treasurer of West County with copy of a resolution passed by the Council relative to the maintenance of the Forty Mile Bush road and stating that the Council would only grant a certain sum monthly for keeping it in repair, and forwarding cheques for amounts due to the Board and

subsidy for the months of July, Augusl and September, A Petition from ratepayers in No, Ward residing to the South of the Kai

whata river, praying for a re-adjustment of the boundaries of No. 5 and (5 Wards and suggesting that in the event of the Board granting to the petition the sum of £SOO should be paid to the credit of No. 5 Ward and also letters from other ratepayers residing in a different part of No. G Ward in support of the petition. The Engineers' report was given in and read.

Mr Hood attended and stated that Mr Miller had applied to the Castle Point Board to have a load laid off on the Upper Taueru, and that he had reasons to believe that the Board would be willing to grant £IOO towards the expense, but as a portion of the proposed road was within the boundary of the Masterton District the Castle Point Board wished to know

:hey would subscribe an equal amount.

Mr Thos Chamberlain asked the Board to lay off a line of road through Mr Hunts property at Mild Mild so as to give him access to his.

Mr Minchiu requesting the Board in he event of the West County refusing to lo so to lay off about two miles of road on he Alfredton to Ekltahuna line commenc-

ing from where it had been laid oft' by the West County Engineer. Tenders varying from £73 up to £lO5 were received for the erection of a bridge on the Matihiwi road.

The following resolutions wero pas-

That Mr W. Buchanan be appointed Treasurer to the Board. That Mr McKenzio be instructed to remove the fence erected by the natives residing at Gladstone, on the road leading to Wainuioru.

That the Secretary write to Mr Jagerliorn and inform him that the Board regret that the state of the funds at present will not allow them to undertake the work applied for, but as there is still a sum

voted for the work in the hands of tho Government, the Chairman will see Mr Beetham and ask him to apply for'the amount. '

That Mr Chamberlain arrange with Mr Harding for the removal of the fence on the property leased by him from Mr Dorset.

.That Mr F Moore, and others who signed the petition for the readjustment of the boundaries of Nos. 5 and G Wards,' be informed that tho Board are inclined to accede to the request, but before finally deciding to do su they are of opinion that Mr Buchanan, Warden for No 5 Ward should bring the matter before the ratepayers of that Ward and get tlioii opinion thereon. In event of their being favorably inclined towards tho proposed re-adjust-ment, that Messrs Pharazyn and Beetham be requested to state what amount of tne slim now due to No 6 Ward, should be placed to the credit of No 5 Ward. That as soon as tho Engineer finishes the work on which he is presently engaged he bo directed to the East Coast to lay off the line of road at Uriti, so that tenders may immediately thereafter be called for the work.

That the overseer lay off lines of road to the property of Messrr Donovan Brown and Palmer, and that he also give an estimate of the expense of felling the bush at Miki Mild, and likewise lay a half chain road through Mr Hunts property so as to give Mr Thos Chamberlian access to his.

That the Secretary write to Mr Fannin and inform him that the Board will not require his services as draughtsman longer than 23rd of September next, but at the same time inform him that the Board are willing to give him any work thoy may require done, to be paid for at so much per day as may be agreed on. That before acceding to Mr Minchin's request he be requested to apply to the iViiirarapa West County Council and get the work done.

That the tenders for the erection of a bridge on the Matihiwi be declined, and that the Chairman see Mr Clark and ask him to get Mr Bannister's consent to a deviation of the line so that the expense of erecting a bridge may for the present he saved,

That the West County Council having passed a resolution fixing a certain sum to be expended monthly on the Forty Milo Bush road, the overseer be requested to see that the wages of the men now employed do not exceed the amount voted by the Council and should have the hands employed reduced so as to bring the monthly payments within the amount voted by the Council. That Messrs Gossett, Carman and others be requested to attend the next meeting of the Board relative to the line at Upper Taueru which they sometime ago requested should be kept open. Payments.
