(PER PRESS AGENCY. WELLINGTON. Wednesday. PARLIAMENTARY, ■ In the Legislative Oouncil, in reply to Taiarooa Colonel Whitmore said that the Maori prisoners would be tried by the ordinary process. A large amount of formal business has been disposed of, A long discussion took place on the action of the Government re the Thames railway. On the motion of Waterhouse, the Council passed a resolution strongly condemning the action of the Government as a direct violation of laiv. Bell, Hall, Waterhonse' and Pollen severely animadadverted on the illeyal action of the Government, which had been done solely to buy political supppii Wliitmoro contended the action of the Government was perfectly legal. Stout and others had been of opinion the Government ; were perfectly justified. Bell tabled a motion that the Government should be prevented

An interesting experiment took place this afternoon on thejreclaimed land with the steam fire engine, of the steam tug Lyttelton, After aoout three hundred yards of hose been laid on, the steam engine, which is separate from the ;main engine of the tug, threw a volume of water greater in quantity and higher than the steam which represented the pressure of town water supply, showing that tiie tug fire engine wonld be great use in case of fire amongst houses or shipping.
